Swedish 70's single about Batman.. funny lyrics.

Anders Glenmark is a very successful Swedish artist/producer that's had career that's lasted for almost 40 years. He recorded a single in 1976 with the title "Läderlappen" - the Swedish name for Batman that was in use until 1989.

Läderlappen translates to "The Leather Patch" but it's also the name of a species of Bats.

This vinyl single is rare and I don't own it (yet..) but I found the song on a CD collection and laughed out loud because of the weird and funny lyrics. Here's a translation:

"Late at night when I go and fetch water,
I hear something that is very mysterious and scary.
So I scout around, this is a case I can solve.
I put on my tights, I go for it and fly....

Chorus:
Hidden behind the mask.
Batman is what they're calling me.
With my cape I can fly away.
Like a bat out of hell I go to every city.
There's no point in hiding away for me.
No villain can escape me."

I visited the Museum of Technology and Science (Tekniska museet) in Stockholm this past weekend. A lot of people wanted to see the full scale and fully working Batmobile replica built by Leif Garvin and Ville Tikkanen.

There weren't a lot of Batman items on display but there are some goodies and rarities - mostly from the 1990s. Here we see mugs, the Ultimate Batman figure (animated series version), the very nicely sculpted Batman coin bank etc. In the center of the display case we see the Warner Bros Batman bust cookie jar.

More 90s stuff. Got all of these myself except for the skateboard.

This display case had the best items in my opinion with the very rare '89 Batman and Joker figures. Leif Garvin showed the Batman figure on national TV last week and I guess it's one of his most prized possessions in his collection. The Swedish Batman soda can can be seen next to the Jack Nicholson Joker figure.

The Batmobile was surrounded by people and a lot of cameras were pointed at the very impressive car that seemed to make adults feel like kids again.

Batman Weekend in Stockholm!

Great news - this weekend Leif Garvin's famous fully working and full scale Batmobile ('89/Keaton model) will be shown at the Museum of Technology (Tekniska museet) in Stockholm, Sweden.

There's a lot of buzz going on right now with the Batmobile and Leif and my friend Lars Batman collection showing up in newspapers and on TV. Great times for Batman collectors and fans in Sweden.

Batman Forever Cassette Player

I've had a photo of this odd cassette player shaped like Batman's (as portrayed by Val Kilmer in Batman Forever) head on the blog before. But these photos are new and a bit better so here goes...

I found this odd item in a box today so I took a closer look and was a bit surprised to find that it's fully functional and batteries still working - it's 15 years old and I've never used it...

Do you see the Val Kilmer resemblance?

Microphone and cassette deck on the back for those who wanna sing-along. Maybe to songs from the Batman Forever soundtrack like Seal's "Kiss from a rose" or U2 - "Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me".

The counter just reached 20 000 and I'm happy that my blog has followers out there!

Even though I've already posted almost every pic I have of my collection (but not every item as some of it is stored away...) I will continue updating when I have the time or have added something to the collection.

Printed photo with Adam West's written autograph ordered from his own web site. He's never been to Sweden as far as I know so I've never met him but it's fun to have this on my wall.

Dark Hero Bootleg Set

One of my favorite bootlegs (knock-offs) is the Dark Hero Deluxe Anti-Crime Set. I actually dig the design of the Batman figure.. It's so over the top and looking more like a costume from Star Trek or a bad 1950's sci-fi movie..

I've got like five or six loose figures...

..and one or two (can't remember) complete unopened sets. Found no photo of the whole set though but here's the top part and the only pic I could find of the Robin figure, pictured to the left.

Got two loose "Batmobiles". Notice the "deluxe" car lights... Cheap stickers. ;-)

Looks like the Dark Hero likes his weapons. And his knife... This is included in the set.

I found this video game on sale so I could not resist... It's an ok fighting game and it's fun to play as Batman or the Joker. It's a bit boring to play after a while but most fighting games are... in my opinion.

Batman Bootlegs from Crete

I was on holiday in Crete (an island in Greece, Europe) this summer and found more bootlegs/knock-off toys to add to my collection. I really like the odd and weird Batman stuff...

This is a action figure/doll called "Hero Series" and features Spider-man, Venom and a photo of actor Brandon Routh as Superman... and on the back..

..Brandon Routh as Superman again as well as Zorro (Antonio Banderas), Venom again etc. An odd mix of characters!

And here's what looks like a Batman army. "Power Mans Invincible Troop Warfare", what a name! A deformed Batman sculpt with gold and silver details. Spider-man and the Power Rangers can be seen on the card.

On the back; The Power Rangers again, Batman in a Neal Adams-like version and Spider-man. The taglines (to the bottom right) made me laugh out loud...

"Hero country zone. Handsome appearance. Hero pioneer."

Hi! I'm back with an update. I've moved to a new city now and the last two months' been very busy and I've carried a lot of boxes with Batman stuff.

However, collecting Batman is not a priority in my life right now as I'm concentrating on work and other projects. But I've got a few new items and here's some of them...

T-shirt "The Harlequin's Hoax", an old DC cover. They sell these at the Cubus stores, a Scandinavian clothing company.

I've received the "Joker's back in town" poster and it looks excellent with bold colors.

The Robin figure looked good but I wish I'd bought one in a better condition. The stand that came with the figure when it was released in 1988 was missing (I knew that when I bought it) and it's needed to make him stand upright.

Right now I'm moving to another city but I'll return to blogging here soon... :-)

Vintage Batman mask

This vintage mask (made in France in the early 80's) arrived some days ago. I just had to have it tough I already have one exactly like it but I used to wear it when I was a kid and pretended I was Batman:

This one is in mint condition and sealed in it's original packaging. Very, very rare... :-)

But as it's a zip bag so I took it out as the plastic could damage the mask after so many years of storage.

One of my favorite Batman covers will be released in the UK (probably in the US too...) as a poster on February 19th. I just had to have it so I've placed a pre-order...

This issue of Batman (#251) was published in 1973 and featured the classic Joker story "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge" by the legendary trio Dennis O'Neal (writer), Neal Adams (penciller) and Dick Giordano (ink).

Lewis Wilson, the first actor to ever portray Batman on film. This publicity shot of him was probably the first photo I ever saw of a "live" Batman. So I bought a photo print from a seller on Ebay. It's not an original but it will look good on my wall.

I decided to take a break from collecting Batman and blogging about it, but I just wanted to write and let you know I'm still around and this blog will update once in a while.. even if it's just once a month or so.

I got two copies of this nice poster from The Dark Knight movie last week. No other additions for the past two months as I'm saving up for the Swedish Sci-Fi Convention in early December.

Here's three of the most fun and weird looking bootleg figures I've got in my collection; The Space Flyman; Batman and Robin (x2) in very colorful costumes. Robin's head looks almost like it belongs to an old doll from the 40s or 50s. On the back of the tag, that features a Batman-like characther fighting on some planet, there is some text. It goes like this:

"Here is a powerful and wonderful man. Also a good fighter beats off any opponent with his strong muscles."

Priceless.

I got this bootleg mask last year (2008) but it's based on the classic Ben Cooper Batman mask from the 70s.

This is not really a mask but I'm posting it anyway.. It seems to be made of fake leather and the ears have seen better days.... I'm not sure from what year it was produced but I'm guessing the late 60's or early 70s.

And this is a felt hat/mask with a nice Bat logo. I got this in the 80s as a birthday present.

This is one of my favorite items from my Batman collection; a rubbeer mask that I got for christmas in 1985, together with a home-made costume by my parents. One of the best gifts I ever got.

Time for some more action figures...

Hush Alfred. Alfred has always been one of my favorite characters in the world of Batman but only a few action figures have been made and this is the only one I have, but I'm gonna get the other two (not counting the Lego figures).

I tried to find an Alfred figure without a red nose and I managed to get one that doesn't look like he's got a cold or too much too drink. Check out Michael Crawford's Review Of The Week page about the red nosed Hush figures...

Azrak-Hamway Batmobile

This is a rather rare radio-controlled Batmobile from 1977, made by the company Azrak-Hamway. The controller is missing and so is most of the antenna (it was much longer) so I have no idea if it works.

But it's a nice display item and both of the bat-logo stickers are intact and the overall condition is rather good.

Ultimate Batman Forever figure from 1995, approx 15" tall (38 cm) standing on a plastic display base. The cape is made of cloth and he's got a batarang in his hand. I got this in the UK and I still have the box. One of the best looking figures from the Batman Forever franchise.

Batman and Philosophy - The Dark Knight of the Soul is a book that asks several questions about the world of the Batman and discusses questions like "Why doesn't Batman kill the Joker?".

What I really liked about this book is the serious approach, like if the Joker can be held morally responsible for killing Robin and hundreds of people. This book would be great for philosophy students as an example of how deep you can dig into a character from fiction and popular culture.

It's not a book you read from start to finish in one night as it's rather demanding, and even though I've studied philosophy and read a lot of English literature I found it a bit heavy at times. But some chapters/topics are an entertaining read and you really understand why the Batman is one of the most complex and well-written characters in comics/popular culture.

Cassette Tapes

The cassette tapes may be a thing of the past but I still have a lot of them with music and computer games for the Commodore 64. I read somewhere that the may become trendy again so perhaps we will, once again, see people with large Walkman players...

1940's Batman Comics - reprints

Four volumes (one in a pocket size) that collects some great Golden Age Batman adventures, printed in black and white. These stories were published in newspapers in the 1940's and they are a good read.

Some years later, in the 1950's the introduction of the Comics Code put an end to the noir-ish and darker atmosphere and made Batman a more comical character who fought aliens and turned into a Bat-Baby...

But as you know that whole thing changed in the 60's and in the 70's things were moving in the right direction again...

These are the Legends of Batman action figures I've got - missing from the photos are Crusader Robin and The Batcycle that I haven't photographed and they are stored away in one of the many boxes that my collection resides in.

Here we go...

I'm gonna get the Flightpack Batman and some more of the Warner Bros store variants to make the collection more complete. And the Egyptian Batman & Catwoman + Viking Batman on card.

Joker & Batman Rubber Masks

The Heath Ledger Joker from TDK. This mask was made by Rubies Costumes in 2008 and it's way too big for my pretty large head. If you wanna dress up like the Joker I'd recommend using makeup on your face and not this mask. The sculpt and paint job is rather poor to but the mask was cheap so you get what you pay for.

The Swedish name for Batman is Läderlappen

In Sweden Batman was published for the first time in the magazine "Adventures Of The Week" (Veckans äventyr), 1945. And six years later, in 1951, he got his own title and the Batman comics was a hit with the Swedish kids.

The correct translation of Batman to Swedish would be "Fladdermusmannen" (A Bat-Man) but instead they choose to name him Läderlappen. People over the age of 60 who grew up with the comics still call him that, even though Batman became the official name in Sweden in 1989 when the movie premiered.

Läderlappen can be translated to "the leather patch" if you break the word apart:
Läder = leather
lappen = the patch

So some people have made fun of the name through the years. But Läderlappen is also an old Swedish word for bat and the family of bats known as Vesper Bats/evening bats (Vespertilionidae in latin). So a better translation of Läderlappen from Swedish to English would be "The Vesper Bat". Sounds way cooler than The Leather Patch...
